Nestled in the heart of Westminster, CA, Canton Restaurant - Cháo Cá Chợ Cũ offers a distinctive culinary fusion where authentic Vietnamese flavors meet traditional Cantonese cuisine. This cozy, no-frills eatery is a beloved destination for those craving soul-soothing dishes crafted with care and rich cultural heritage.
The star of the menu is undoubtedly the delicate and creamy Fish Porridge (Cháo Cá), served piping hot in traditional clay pots that retain warmth beautifully, inviting diners into a comforting embrace with every spoonful. From the smooth texture of the congee to the subtle freshness of ginger and herbs garnishing the top, each bowl radiates a comforting warmth that feels like home. Paired with the perfectly crisp Chinese Donuts (炸油条), the contrast creates a satisfying dance of textures that elevates the entire experience.
Beyond the porridge, Canton Restaurant shines with a wide array of authentic dishes that cater to both Vietnamese and Cantonese palates. The Hong Kong Style Beef Chow Fun is a must-try, celebrated by patrons for its smoky, charcoal-grilled flavor and tender stir-fried noodles enveloped in a savory sauce. Though slightly rich, its comforting essence makes it incredibly satisfying. For fans of grilled delights, the Barbeque Fish on a Sizzling Platter and Grilled Pork with Rice bring complex layers of smoky, charred goodness complemented by perfectly cooked rice.
Those seeking variety will appreciate the thoughtful selection of noodle soups such as Mì Hoành Thánh (Wonton Noodles), Shrimp Noodle Soup, and Pork Kidney Noodle Soup, each delivering a broth imbued with depth and nuanced aromatics. The Yeung Chow Fried Rice and crispy Seafood Chow Mein offer vibrant flavors and textures that linger pleasantly on the palate.
The restaurant’s atmosphere embraces simplicity and warmth. As customers have noted, the porridge is served in charming, heat-retentive bowls that keep the food comforting from the first bite to the last. The space encourages a casual and relaxed dining pace, ideal for a hearty breakfast, lunch, or dinner. A word of practical advice: Canton Restaurant operates on a cash-only basis, a small detail that ensures a smooth visit when prepared.
The genuine enthusiasm from patrons like NiCHA KONALO, who praises the “comforting congee served in traditional clay pots” and the “perfectly crispy” fried dough sticks, and Bryan Su, who thrillingly compares the Vietnamese rendition of pork blood and fish congee as superior to its Chinese counterparts, underscores the restaurant’s standing as a rare gem in the Westminster dining scene. Tap Natoza’s glowing review of the beef chow fun’s “charcoal broiled taste” and Gloria Wu’s fondness for the egg rolls further reinforce its reputation for quality and authenticity.
Whether you come seeking a warm bowl of porridge to start your day, crave the tender beef chow fun, or wish to dive into a rich assortment of Vietnamese and Cantonese specialties, Canton Restaurant - Cháo Cá Chợ Cũ promises a memorable meal filled with tradition, bold flavors, and heartfelt hospitality.

Canton Restaurant impressed me with its comforting congee served in traditional clay pots. The porridge was smooth and flavorful, topped with fresh ginger and herbs. The fried dough sticks were perfectly crispy and paired well with condensed milk. A warm, satisfying breakfast spot with authentic flavors.
The pork blood and added fish congee was super good and there’s other options too! I added fish to my pork blood congee but even if not it was great the pieces of pork blood were HUGE and so was the fish and super delicious hella worth visiting actually better than Chinese versions of the same dish, somehow the Vietnamese just do everything better even Cantonese dishes Also got an iced coffee which was good too :P
First time here because we wanted porridge. Went on a weekday. The porridge is comforting and the egg rolls were yums.
This place is a comforting and affordable restaurant that serves Vietnamese food. It’s my go-to place for chao, and they come served in cute bowls that hold heat well, so there’s no need to worry about your food going cold before you finish. My favorite side to add is the fried Chinese donuts! Heads up, the restaurant is cash only!
Food: We tried three things 1) We try the HK style beef chow fun and it was really amazing a must try here. You can taste the charcoal broiled taste and it was well seasoned. Might be a little oily though but the taste is very nice 5/5 2) Next is fish Congee with pork blood on sides. The presentation is nice and taste is average but I try putting little hotsauce and fish sauce to add flavor and it went well 4/5 3) Chinese Donut is a must too. taste blend well with the congee and taste is reallu 5/5. Service: When we came in it was not too crowded so the order was done pretty fast so service is 5/5 Ambiance: It was nice and clean like typical vietnamese restaurant nothing fancy. Parking: A lot of parking space.
I stopped in at Chạo Cá Chò Cú in Westminster after hearing so much buzz, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The place was packed with mostly Chinese and Vietnamese locals, which to me is always the best sign that a restaurant is doing something right. The atmosphere was busy but still welcoming, and the staff were extremely friendly and attentive even with so many tables to take care of. What really stood out for me was their vegetable chow fun. The noodles weren’t quite as wide or as thick as I expected, but they were still cooked beautifully—chewy, flavorful, and full of that smoky wok aroma that makes chow fun special. The vegetables were fresh and plentiful, and the whole dish came together in a way that was absolutely delicious. A lot of restaurants don’t even serve proper chow fun noodles, but this place does, and it makes a big difference. The menu itself is a unique mix of Chinese and Vietnamese dishes, which gives you a lot of options depending on what you’re in the mood for. Everything I saw coming out of the kitchen looked generous and authentic, and it’s clear why this spot is so popular among locals. One thing to note: they don’t take credit cards, so make sure you bring cash or be ready to pay by Zelle. It’s worth the extra step because the food and service really deliver. If you’re in Westminster and want to experience a local favorite with excellent chow fun and a lively crowd, this is the place to go.
